§ ¶Sound waves
The day of my last entry, I had two positive hearing experiences:- I heard a noise when I got out of the car, and realized it was because I had left the headlights on. I usually didn't hear this sound before, because it's a high frequency.
- While a Clifford DVD was playing, I asked Aaron if I had just heard, "I love Clifford, the big red dog," and he said yes. Now, I know some of the words to the Clifford song, but to be able to pick out that sentence so perfectly and clearly - that was neat!
I had planned to do a lot of rehab when visiting my parents at their beach house. I forgot to take into account how loud the waves are. I can hear them without the CI, but of course with the CI, it's magnified. It was too hot to close the windows and I wasn't ready for the challenge of background noise.
One morning at breakfast, Dad initiated an impromptu rehab session when he said he was going to talk about the immediate environment. He proceeded to say open set sentences like, "It looks like a cloudy day." I got at least 50% of what he said, which surprised him. He was further impressed when we had an official rehab session another time, using some categories I gave him from Kris. He admitted that he had realistically expected me to only hear environmental sounds with my CI, and not much more than that. It made me feel better about my (seemingly slow) progress.
